I Know the Score! Weekend Writing Warriors #WeWriWa

Welcome back for another Weekend Writing Warriors, where authors share an 8-sentence excerpt. Today I'm sharing from my VERY RECENTLY PUBLISHED young adult paranormal romance, ONCE AND FOR ALL. This is book 2 in the Sky Cove Series. Both books in the series are available at AmazonB&N, and other retailers. (A complete list of links appears on the right sidebar.)
Welcome back for another

Today's snippet comes from Chapter 2 of the book. Phoebe and Todd have been paired to work together on an art project. She's not at all happy about it, so she figures the easiest solution is to tell him she'll do all the work and put his name on it, along with hers, once it's finished. However, Todd may not be exactly "okay" with that scenario...

"Look, I know the score, okay?" I began. "I know you expect me to do all the work and be brilliant and then just put your name on it so you get half the credit."

He pushed away from the doorjamb he'd been leaning on and took a step toward me. "It's not that," he started to say, but I cut him off.

"And I'm okay with that," I said.

He looked at me like I'd grown a second head.

"I'm absolutely fine with that scenario," I reiterated.

His gaze blinked away from me, and for a split second I almost thought I saw an expression of hurt cross his face.

  1. I so enjoy these two characters. I'm with Todd, I need to know why she's ok with what she just outlined - excellent excerpt!

  2. Being someone who always hated group projects, I totally understand wanting to do the work myself, but I get the feeling that her issue is more about working with Todd than working with others. I'd like to really get a feel for his reaction.

Side note -- you have a couple of typos: 2 times you have FORM instead of FROM (He pushed away...and his gaze blinked away)

  5. Wow---it sounds like her ego is getting in the way. Or have other people used her talent like this before?

  6. Hmm, there's some damage behind her words. Intriguing!

  7. Don't agree to it, Todd! For one thing, it's wrong, for another she's chicken (I haven't used that term in forever). She's also unfairly judged him. This is going to be good!

  8. Okay, I'm hooked. Gotta find out what he's feeling and why! Hurry up next Sunday!

  10. Thanks for the comments all - and for alerting me to the typos! YIKES! Phoebe is a social nobody... Todd is Mr. Popularity. Being paired to work with him is a nightmare for, particularly given his reputation of being shallow and lazy. She figures he won't want to work, and she doesn't want to work WITH him, so she offers this solution. Little does she know, Todd's trying to turn over a new leaf. However, smooth sailing their partnership is NOT!

  12. She doesn't even know her foot is in her mouth, lol. So want to know what he's going to say, once given the chance. Entertaining snippet.

  13. It's scary how often those "split second thoughts" can be so prophetic.
    Well done!
