#SixSunday - Mean and Stupid

Happy Sunday Sixers! Thanks for stopping by! I always appreciate the comments and encouragement. I look forward to hopping around to other blogs and reading what other talented authors have shared!

I'm continuing with my YA Paranormal book, ONCE AND FOR ALL, the sequel to ONCE AGAIN, which is now available (links to the right), and was reviewed recently at Night Owl Reviews! ONCE AND FOR ALL follows Phoebe Campbell and Todd Miller as they encounter their own reincarnation mystery. Last week we got a glimpse into Phoebe's dream about the strange woman in the woods. The woman's words... "He must see you"... combined with Todd's insistence that he wants to be a productive member of their partnership on the art project has left Phoebe feeling somewhat LESS negative about him. However, the next day at school changes that. In the following snippet, we encounter Phoebe as she runs into Todd and a couple of his friends right outside the art room door.

"You can't seriously want to stay in this class with crazies like her."  This from the meathead known as Shane London, who said the word crazies and gestured toward me without even attempting to hide the fact that he was insulting me.

It took real talent to be both mean and stupid simultaneously.

"I talked to Mr. Brunswick, and he said he could fit you in the weight-lifting class even though it's technically full," said meathead number two, Collin Wells. "You know you want out of this place before any of the weird rubs off on you."

Miller shrugged, started to laugh, then stopped when he saw me.

  1. That's a great dialogue exchange as well as indirect character reveals. Great six!

  2. The 'meathead' had me laughing, as I was instantly transported back to a childhood show with the racist bigot Archie Bunker. Perfect word to describe these morons!

But then that last line had me actually tear up. Funny how idiots don't bother us, but if it's someone we like joining in... Just her watching him as he starts to laugh, powerful! Relatable! So glad he stopped laughing. Great six!

  4. Mean and stupid, indeed. I like the phrase, "before any of the weird rubs off on you." Lots of labels being slung that draw a line in the sand.

  5. You really do capture how it feels to be a teenager in high school (at least as far as I remember it LOL)! Great excerpt!

  8. Ouch. Todd's going to have some work to do to change her opinion again, hey? And, it seems Todd's friends don't really understand him. I'm looking forward to reading more!

  10. I knew a couple of meatheads in school, one a student, the other a math teacher. Yuck! I totally get this.
