Quotable Discussions

One of my favorite quotes about writing...

"Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart." ~William Wordsworth

To me, these words say so much about the heart and soul of a writer. Writing isn't easy. It's hard. It's tedious. It isn't a quick process. It can be a very lonely endeavor. But for those of us who write, it's a necessary part of who we are. It's done out of love and drive and the need to create.

I think about the stories I've written... some complete, some still waiting... and everyone of them is full of the "breathings of my heart". A girl who's forever felt plain and ordinary being seen as beautiful and extraordinary by a man who loves her... a dream thought lost resurrected once again... finding self-worth in your life's work... deep, aching wounds you thought would last forever finally being healed... and so on and so on and so on...

I think Wordsworth hit the nail on the head.

  1. This is a beautiful quote. And isn't the writing always so much better when we can dig deep and open our hearts to let it bleed onto the page?

  2. I actually have this quote as my signature in one of my emails.

It spoke to me, as it did to you. I can't imagine writing half-heartedly when it comes to the stories I've desired to write for the majority of my life. I guess for me I love this quote because I not only believe that the only way to write honestly and to the best of my ability is to do so from the heart, but also that each time I do write, I'm breathing life into them and I want it to be the best "life" I can offer them...

It's like CPR from the heart. ;o)

  3. A wonderful quote and I'm blown away by your thoughts about the quote, Amy. You're a beautiful writer. It can be quite a lonely endeavor and it can be painful but it's as necessary as breathing to a writer.

  4. Amy: Thank you for the quote. I really needed this one. for a while I became blinded by the business of writing and lost that special feeling. And now that it's back, I have very little time to write. But I'm still taking it a scene at a time.
I so much enjoy your blog!!
    Write on,
